Once you have kids, I’m pretty sure all holidays belong to them, and Valentine’s Day is no exception. As a parent, Valentine’s Day has taken on a whole new meaning. What was once viewed as a romantic holiday with flowers, dinner, and chocolates has been replaced by paper valentines, boxes of conversation hearts, loads of glitter and all the adorable outfits they just have to have!
With Christmas so recently behind us, although the kids already think it’s been forever, the idea of another holiday can be a little daunting. Here are a few quick and easy ideas to celebrate a special Valentine’s Day with your kiddos without breaking the bank or losing your sanity.
♥ Have a family Valentine’s Day dinner.
We’re not fancy around here. It’s a good day if my kids eat something other than mac and cheese, so I’m thinking simple, like heart-shaped pizza or grilled cheese. You could also have breakfast (or breakfast for dinner, which we love) with heart-shaped pancakes and pink eggs! I like to use these natural food colors. They’re non-GMO, gluten-free, vegan and made from plants without artificial dyes.
♥ Make Valentine’s cards together instead of buying them.
This is definitely a little more time consuming but something that gets your kids flexing their creativity. There are a ton of cute ideas on Pinterest for homemade Valentine’s or buy a kit like this one and make them together.
♥ Throw A Valentine’s Day tea party.
This was so much fun to do with my girls and cost less than $10! Macie and Reagan loved having their own private party complete with fancy teacups (leftovers from Macie’s Alice in ONEderland party) and pretty Valentine’s Day cookies. The sweet floral “tablecloth” is a towel from the Target dollar spot and so is the red dessert tray and glittery banner. It was fun to photograph them while they played and didn’t really pay any attention to me.
♥ Bring back a little Christmas magic with a Valentine’s themed advent calendar.
Macie is obsessed with the advent calendar for Christmas so I know she would love to do a countdown to Valentine’s Day, or any day if it involves chocolate. At least the countdown to V-day is a little shorter!
♥ Give each other Valentine’s themed mani/pedis.
This was on my holiday bucket list and we never got to it, so it’s making another appearance for V-day!
♥ Make Valentine’s themed cookies.
You can find a million great recipes but I make these the super-easy, I don’t have time for home-made cookies way. Just buy a roll of pre-made cookie dough from the refrigerated section of the store, add flour and then you can roll it out and use cookie cutters to create shapes. You can either make frosting or again, make it super easy and buy squeezable icing. The kids loved using these to decorate our Christmas cookies.
Hope you and your family have a sweet Valentine’s Day!
