I am what you would call a product junky. If you ask my husband he would have another name for me, more like a product hoarder…I refuse to accept that. But yes, I buy a lot of products…and I also throw away a lot of products.
Why I Use Natural Products
After being diagnosed with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis in 2013, I did a ton of research to learn about my autoimmune disease and how to control it, aside from just prescription medications. What I discovered, was that a gluten-free diet (and in an ideal world dairy free and many other food items free) and living as naturally as possible, were the best ways to reduce the symptoms associated with Hashimoto’s. I’ve always loved buying natural and organic whenever possible, but now it’s even more important.
I slowly started incorporating changes into my lifestyle, but for the most part, I was still using typical drug store shampoos and make-up without really thinking about what was in those items and what was being absorbed by my body. In 2015, when I was pregnant with the twins, I started noticing some sort of an allergic reaction on my lips with swelling, itching, and burning. After a visit to the dermatologist, I was diagnosed with an allergy but it was unknown what exactly was causing it. I was given a topical treatment and advised to only use Vaseline basically indefinitely and nothing else on my lips. Are you freakin’ kidding me? For a lipstick lover like myself, that was like giving me a terminal diagnosis.
After a couple of weeks of no lipstick, I couldn’t take it and decided to go on a quest to find some products I could use. The most likely allergen that I realized is in a lot of lipstick products is gluten. Crazy, right? So, I started using some Tarte lipsticks that I already owned, which are gluten-free as well as free of a lot of other nasty chemicals, and no reaction! To this day, I still don’t know for sure which ingredient is causing the problem and I’d hoped it was pregnancy related, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. I still can’t use products unless they are “all natural” and free of gluten and other chemicals.
I realized that if I was having this problem with my lips, there was a good chance that other areas, like my hair, might benefit from using less chemical laden products. In my searches, I have found some great products, some ok products and some that I didn’t like at all. So, I thought I would take some of the guesswork out of it for others and share some natural products that actually work (or at least in my opinion).
Natural Products For Lips
I love Tarte and all the amazing options they have. I love their LipSurgence line and have a drawer full of these. Though sadly they’ve discontinued several that I love. I have both the matte and glossy colors and they are all amazing and not drying at all. Another product I’m obsessed with is lip stains. I’ve tried a few and one that I absolutely love is 100% Pure Lip and Cheek Stain. It’s fruit pigmented, goes on smooth, and lasts most of the day. I like to layer it under a gloss or another lipstick.
Natural Products For Healthy Hair
I am in love with Shea Moisture products, for both hair and body actually. Everything they make smells amazing and I use it on both me and my kids since I know it’s totally free of junk. I have about a million different options from shampoo to curling cream to lotion. It’s amazing stuff.
I have been trying to grow my hair out for about two years now and I swear this Jamaican Black Castor Oil shampoo and conditioner has made such a huge difference. Have you read about the benefits of castor oil for your hair? If not, you should Pinterest that. It smells great (of course) and doesn’t way down my hair. It’s also safe for color treated hair and I think it’s actually improved the texture of my hair after going blonde last year and now back to brown.
I’ve also recently tried Maui Moisture Blow Out Mist and I L-O-V-E it. My hair just seems to be so much smoother when I blow dry and just feels better when I use it. Since I try not to wash my hair daily, I don’t like to use heavy products and this is super lightweight. And speaking of blow drying, I finally splurged and bought a Harry Josh Pro Tools Pro Dryer. Not only is it a fun minty green color but it’s seriously the best and dries my hair so much faster.
Because I don’t wash my hair daily, I, of course, need to talk about dry shampoo. Another recent discovery, found on Jane.com, is Rooted Hair Powder. This stuff is a game changer! I hate using sprays because I feel like I’m breathing in nasty chemicals and other powders leave my hair looking dusty or chalky. Rooted is formulated for blondes or in my case brunettes and smells amazing. I barely use any of it, and my hair isn’t greasy at all. And I actually think I have more volume even though my hair is unwashed. I can go like three days without washing when I’m using this.
Natural Products For Body
In addition to the Shea Moisture body products I love, let’s talk about deodorants. It’s not glamorous but it’s fine. Everyone who likes natural products is on a quest for the all natural aluminum free deodorant that actually works and I love Schmidt’s deodorant for that reason. I did use Piper Wai for a while, if you like Shark Tank, then you probably know what I’m talking about. I do think Piper Wai works but I didn’t like that I had to apply it with my hand. Schmidt’s has so many different scents and I only have to apply it once in the morning. As you can see by the faded label, this is well loved. 😉
This is just a small list of what I use but definitely some of my favorite products. Hit me up if you have any questions about these products or any product suggestions for me! I’m always open to trying and buying more. ❤️
