Happy Halloween week! Is that a thing? I’m posting this a little later than planned but I think I’m still recovering from a Halloween hangover! It was such a busy night going straight from work to getting three kids dressed to trick or treating the night away! But, it was so fun and so worth it. I hope you had a faBOOlous Halloween too!
I wasn’t sure how this year was going to go with the twins being just shy of two. It was kind of hit or miss as to whether or not they would be into it, but they totally shocked me! Normally, Reagan is our super shy, stranger danger child and Lincoln is super chill, but Reagan was so into trick or treating from the get-go! She was running right up to every house with her sister and gettin’ that candy! Lincoln, on the other hand, took a little warming up. He really didn’t want to leave the “safe zone” of the wagon and any time he got up the nerve to approach a door, he took off in the other direction when someone opened it but he got into it eventually and then he was off and running.
This year, the costumes were a combo of store bought items and a little DIY. As I shared previously, Macie decided on her costume a while back and chose to be the genie Shimmer from Shimmer and Shine! We bought her costume on Amazon and it came with a pink ponytail, but it didn’t come with the pearl headpiece or necklace so I had to come up with a little something for those. We used pink hair chalk to add a little more pink to the front of her hair and she wore cute gold glittery ballet flats.
The jewelry was actually super easy to make. I found the large green jewels at Michael’s and bought strands of pearls for the headpiece. I tied the strands of pearls together, creating a “necklace” that we could fit over her head and then added a shorter strand down the center to tuck into her ponytail. I attached them using bobby pins on the sides and in her ponytail. Super easy! I purchased a large pearl necklace and then simply attached the jewel to the center of it. It was actually so much cheaper to DIY these than to purchase the costume sets online.
Since this was my husband’s year to pick out the twin’s costumes, I tried to find something we would both like! We ended up going with a hunter and a deer because hey, this is Idaho and that’s perfect. The biggest factor in choosing their costumes was trying to find something they would be comfortable in. Last year, Lincoln HATED his Big Bad Wolf costume so I wanted to find something that wouldn’t require him to wear a mask or anything like that. I basically ended up buying all clothing items that they can wear again, so that’s a total score in my book.
For Lincoln’s costume, I purchased a camo Carhartt hoodie and beanie and an adorable camo wood pop gun. We already had his khaki pants and OshKosh shoes and that was all there was to his costume, so it was basically clothes! No tears this year and he kept the hat on all night. Plus, it was a little chilly so at least his costume was practical too!
For the headpiece, I found a small pair of antlers that I painted with gold craft paint. I actually attached them to a wide headband by screwing three short screws through the underside of the headband. I wrapped and hot glued beige felt all the way around the headband as well as some light pink felt around the very bottom. The ears were also created with felt. I drew a template and then traced it onto the felt and cut it out, making sure to leave enough length on the bottom so I could wrap it around the headband and attach with hot glue. I added a little sparkle inside the ears with gold glitter fabric. Lastly, I attached some cute flowers to the center of the headband using hot glue. This headpiece is my absolute favorite part of the entire thing!
This was such a fun Halloween and these costumes were a big hit! I loved putting the makeup on the girls and they were all so stinkin’ cute, I just want to dress them up every day! And Macie, of course, adorably suckered me into being the Shine for her Shimmer, so I got in on the dressing up too!
