This week, I celebrated my birthday with my family and a little DIY project. I’ve been wanting to create a vanity space in our bedroom since we moved into our home and happen to have the perfect blank wall to put one. I had thought about buying an inexpensive and simple white desk on Amazon but little did I know, my husband had other plans for me. A couple of months ago, he sneakily made a purchase on Craigslist and in typical fashion, he couldn’t wait for my birthday to give it to me. He found this cute vintage vanity for $50, sanded it down (the part I hate the most) and then gifted me with a DIY project to re-finish it. He sure knows the way to my heart. ❤️
Though I struggled a little bit with painting this beautiful wood, I wanted to keep the vanity clean and bright with a white paint. I was debating between chalk paint, which I have been curious to experiment with, or just a regular white latex paint when I stumbled upon Valspar Furniture Paint during a recent trip to Lowe’s. It has a low sheen finish that mimics the look of chalk paint but from reviews I read, it’s supposed to be super durable. I decided on the color right off the shelf, Ultra White, but you can also get this tinted to any Valspar color.
According to Valspar, there is no sanding or priming required with this paint and no brush marks. I can’t speak to the no sanding part since my husband had already done that but I did skip the primer and I used a roller to apply but it is definitely super smooth with no brush marks. Personally, I wouldn’t do a project like this without sanding, at least to remove the shiny finish, but I’d be curious to see your results if you try it!
I ended up applying three coats to get full coverage. I probably could have done less if I had primed it, but I still have about half a can leftover so this stuff will stretch pretty far. All in all, I am happy with it. I do have my doubts about it “protecting from spills, scuffs and scratches” with the super matte finish but hopefully it will hold up well. It’s also worth noting that this paint has a very low odor, not unpleasant at all like a lot of paints I’ve used. So that was an unexpected bonus!
Aside from the paint, the only other purchase I had to make for the vanity itself was the handles. I didn’t want to use the super vintage black metal pulls it came with so I ended up going with cup pulls. I purchased these Brainerd cup pulls in Champagne Bronze at Lowe’s and they were exactly what I had wanted.
The next step was to find a chair for the vanity. I had envisioned something cute and furry. Kind of sounds like I’m describing a puppy, doesn’t it? I didn’t want to spend a lot on a chair and looking at some prices online, they were a bit out of my budget. We did a quick yard sale run one Saturday morning and ended up finding a perfect white stool for only $9. Well, almost perfect. It was a little tall so the hubby went to work by sawing off about 4 inches on each leg…and then it was perfect. 🙂
I’ve been loving the gold-dipped look I see all over Pinterest so I decided to try my hand at it. I used painters tape and some paper to cover the areas I wanted to keep white and went to work with a brassy gold spray paint. To achieve my cute and furry look, I found a cheap (like 5 bucks!) pink fur bath mat at Walmart. I used my heavy-duty stapler and some roofing nails to wrap it around the seat…and done! Cute, furry, comfy vanity chair for under $20.
Have you seen all the cute prints with lashes or quotes like “All I need is coffee and mascara?” I absolutely love these! I really wanted to do make-up themed wall art to go with the space and luckily this seems to be on trend right now. On a trip to Hobby Lobby, I found several perfect prints. What don’t they have there? If you don’t live near a Hobby Lobby (I’m so sorry!) or prefer to shop online, you can also find some great prints like this on Etsy and Amazon.
I’ve seen some amazing vanities on Pinterest using the Ikea Lack shelf. Sadly, we don’t have an Ikea in Boise and the shipping cost on their site is insane, like $300! But, we do have a company called Assembled in Boise that goes to the closest Ikea about every other week. For a MUCH smaller fee, they will pick up an item for you and deliver it to your home within a couple days. So, I decided to pay the fee and fulfill my vanity dreams. 🙂
I am so happy with how this space turned out. I picked up a few acrylic organizers for the drawers and for my make-up brushes. It’s amazing to see how much make-up I have, now that I can actually find all of it! I also purchased a pink furry rug to match the seat (I got this at Walmart as well but doesn’t appear to be available online). My husband picked up these LED strip lights and we attached them to the wall on each side of the mirror (by the way, if you recognize that mirror, it’s the one from my downstairs bathroom that I replaced AGAIN). My clever husband plugged the lights into a Christmas light switch so now I can use a remote to turn them on and off. Gotta give him credit for a great idea. 😉
I can’t wait to put this vanity to use! For the details on any of these items, you can shop this post below!
