Happy Thursday! I’m so excited to share a quick project, a DIY farmhouse sign, I completed yesterday. Also, please keep reading and you’ll find an option to subscribe to my blog to get a copy of this print for free!
I’ve been in love with the idea of hanging a large sign above my bed with the quote, “And I think to myself, what a wonderful world.” The song “Somewhere Over The Rainbow/What A Wonderful World” by Israel Kamakawiwo’ole is a special song for us as it was the first song that played at our wedding and the one that my husband and the wedding party walked down the aisle to. I’ve seen several versions of this for purchase but decided I could create one myself, especially since I wanted a large size, 24″ x 36″.
I created the print using an online tool. I love Canva. You don’t have to pay for the full version to access all the great templates and fonts but you can pay the monthly or annual fee and have the option to upload your own fonts. I did opt to sign up for the monthly fee because there was a very specific font that I wanted. I purchased my font, Braveheart, at Creative Market for $17. After downloading my font, I then uploaded it to Canva and it was ready to use! Unfortunately, I really wanted to use the font swashes but those wouldn’t work on Canva, so I just found a line shape that I liked from Canva’s available designs and it worked out great. You can also do a custom size, so I just entered my dimensions and was ready to begin.
After I had my text exactly as I wanted on Canva, I downloaded the file and then had it printed as a poster size at Walgreens (they’re currently offering a 50% off coupon), so I got it for about $15. Walgreens photo editor was indicating that my print would be blurry but I knew I had created it as a 24×36 so don’t panic, I went for it anyway and it came out totally clear. You could also have it printed at Vista prints online for a great price but I’m a little bit more of an immediate gratification kinda gal. 😉
Now for the frame. I made a trip to Hobby Lobby on my lunch break. I looked through their open back frames, but there was nothing that was quite what I wanted and of course they weren’t 50% off as they had been the week before. So, here’s a tip, Hobby Lobby almost always has a clearance aisle with items marked 50% to 80% off. Since all I needed was the frame, it really didn’t matter what print was in it. I found an amazing deal on a farmhouse frame. It had an existing black and white photo of a city scape and was on clearance for 80% off, so it came out to $14!
When I got it home, I had to pry up all the nails on the back to remove the existing print, which it turns out it was glued to the backer board. So I just used rubber cement to glue my print right over the existing one, popped it back into the frame and pushed all the nails back down to hold the print in again.
Boom! A 2 foot by 3 foot farmhouse frame for $47! And if you use one of Canva’s many amazing fonts, then it would only be $30. Compared to the $100 price tag I had seen on other sites, I think this looks awesome and is a total steal!
